## How Fast Alcohol Depletes Hepatic GSH

Hepatic glutathione drops measurably within hours of meaningful alcohol intake. The depletion has multiple sources running at once: GSH gets consumed conjugating with acetaldehyde (forming a glutathione-acetaldehyde adduct that gets excreted), it gets consumed neutralizing the reactive oxygen species generated by ethanol metabolism, and it gets consumed by glutathione peroxidases handling lipid peroxides produced as collateral damage[1][2]. The combined depletion rate exceeds the cell's capacity to re-synthesize GSH from cysteine precursors, so the net hepatic GSH level falls.

The depletion is more pronounced in the mitochondrial GSH pool than in the cytoplasmic pool, which is part of why mitochondrial dysfunction is one of the longer-lived consequences of alcohol exposure[3]. Mitochondrial GSH does not have its own synthesis machinery -- it has to be transported in from the cytoplasm via a specific carrier -- so when cytoplasmic GSH drops, the mitochondrial pool drops with a lag and recovers more slowly.

This is the part that changes how to think about alcohol recovery. The hepatic GSH depletion lasts considerably longer than the alcohol itself takes to clear. Animal studies of acute and chronic ethanol exposure show GSH levels remain depleted for hours after blood alcohol has returned to zero, and chronic exposure depresses baseline GSH levels for days[1][2]. (this kinetic detail is what changed how I think about hangover recovery, because the depletion lingers long after the alcohol clears.)

The depletion-and-recovery curve is documented across animal and human work, in the published GSH-and-alcohol literature at least.

## Why Restoring GSH Matters

This is the case for SAG specifically as opposed to standard oral GSH or to NAC. SAG delivers intact glutathione across the gut wall and into liver cells where it joins the depleted pool directly. NAC provides cysteine precursor that the cell still has to assemble into GSH. Without an exogenous GSH source, the recovery has ot rely on the cell's own synthesis machinery, which is slower than the depletion.

## What Happens When GSH Stays Depleted Too Long

When hepatic GSH stays depleted across multiple drinking episodes, the cell loses its capacity to handle subsequent oxidative load. This is part of how moderate-to-heavy chronic drinking accumulates damage that single-episode-focused supplements never quite address. The structural framing in the H180 formula is: clear acetaldehyde faster (DHM) AND keep the GSH pool topped up (SAG) so the cumulative damage curve is shifted in the right direction over time.
