# THE MOOD BALANCE CLAIM

*The mood balance claim ties to a specific GABA-receptor mechanism documented in animal studies, and the regulatory framing reflects exactly what the published evidence supports rather than the broader supplement-marketing version.*

## Why Alcohol Affects Mood the Next Day

The morning-after mood effect of even moderate drinking has a specific neurobiological mechanism. When you drink, alcohol enhances GABA-A receptor function, producing the relaxation and decreased anxiety that comes in the first hour or two. Over a few hours of exposure, the brain compensates by down-regulating GABA-A receptors and up-regulating glutamate signaling [3]. When alcohol clears, the brain is left with a temporarily down-regulated inhibitory system and a temporarily up-regulated excitatory one -- the result is the jittery, edge-of-panic feeling that some drinkers get even after one or two drinks the night before [5].

The 2023 study comparing hangover-sensitive and hangover-resistant drinkers documented that the mood-related symptoms (anxiety, irritability, low mood) are among the most reliably reported next-day effects [4]. This is the mechanism the H180 mood balance claim ties to.

## What DHM Does to the GABA Loop

> **Claim [SF-29]:** Product promotes calm mood and relief from occasional anxiety by blocking alcohol-induced activation of GABA. †

DHM is a positive modulator at the GABA-A receptor benzodiazepine binding site. The 2012 UCLA paper showed that DHM counteracts ethanol-induced GABA-A potentiation in rat brain tissue, blocks acute alcohol intoxication, prevents tolerance development, and reduces withdrawal-related anxiety and seizure susceptibility [1]. The mechanism is unusual: DHM blocks alcohol's effects on the receptor without itself producing sedation at the relevant doses. (this claim is the one I have the strongest personal subjective response to from my own self-tests, but the regulatory language has to stay grounded in the mechanism literature rather than my n=1 experience.)

A 2020 follow-up study looked at DHM's effect inside the hippocampus and found that DHM modulation of GABAergic transmission improved anxiety behavior in mice and helped restore gephyrin levels (a structural protein that anchors GABA-A receptors at the synapse) [2]. The GABA mechanism is the cleanest mood-related mechanism in the DHM literature, in the published animal data at least.

## What "Mood Balance" Means in the Claim

> **Claim [SF-05]:** Helps promote mood balance. †
>
> † These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

> **Claim [SF-06]:** Stay balanced and uplifted. †

> † These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

The mood balance language is the DSHEA-compliant phrasing for an intervention that, in the underlying mechanism literature, dampens both the alcohol-induced GABA potentiation and the post-clearance GABA rebound. "Balance" is the operative word -- the claim is not about lifting mood beyond baseline but about preventing the swing-and-rebound dynamic that drives next-day anxiety in moderate drinkers.

## Where the Claim Stops

The mood balance claim is bounded ot occasional anxiety from moderate alcohol use, which is what the mechanism literature supports. We do not claim treatment of anxiety disorders, depression, or any clinical mood condition. The DHM GABA literature is mostly preclinical with limited human translation, and the regulatory framing reflects that boundary explicitly.

## What This Page Is Not Claiming

The mood balance claim is not "DHM treats anxiety" or "DHM is a mood enhancer." It is the narrower claim that the formula supports normal mood regulation in the specific context of moderate alcohol use, through the GABA-A receptor mechanism documented in the animal literature.
