# THE SCIENCE BEHIND THE CLAIMS

*The structure-function claims H180 makes are not marketing flourishes -- each one ties back to a specific published mechanism, and this cluster maps each claim to the underlying research.*

These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

## Why This Cluster Exists

Structure-function claims under DSHEA require that the claim be truthful, not misleading, and substantiated by the manufacturer. "Substantiated" means there is competent and reliable scientific evidence for the claim. For H180 that means each claim ties back to a published mechanism in the underlying ingredient literature, and this cluster is where we lay that mapping out in detail. (this cluster exists because the easiest way for a supplement company to get itself in regulatory trouble is to make a claim it cannot defend back to a specific mechanism in the literature.)

## The Five Claim Categories Covered

The H180 approved-claims list groups into roughly five functional categories, and each gets its own page in this cluster.

> **Claim [SF-21]:** Acts by promoting aldehyde and alcohol metabolism of foods. †
>
> † These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

The aldehyde-metabolism claim is the headline claim and the one most directly tied to DHM's mechanism in the published animal literature. The Shen 2012 paper from UCLA established the foundation [1] and subsequent work has confirmed and extended the finding [2]. For the full mapping, see [Aldehyde Metabolism Explained](/science/claims/aldehyde-metabolism).

> **Claim [SF-30]:** Helps to detoxify your liver and other organs. †
>
> † These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

The liver detoxification claim ties to glutathione's role as the primary intracellular antioxidant in hepatic tissue [4] and to DHM's hepatoprotective effects in animal models [2]. For the full mapping, see [Liver Detoxification](/science/claims/liver-detoxification).

> **Claim [SF-23]:** Attenuates the rate of brain aging. †
>
> † These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration. This product is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.

The brain aging claim is the only Group 3 claim that depends on the brain-aging research literature rather than the alcohol metabolism literature. The 2019 preclinical review of DHM in brain aging and neurodegenerative disease is the anchoring citation [3]. For the full mapping, see [The Brain Aging Claim](/science/claims/brain-aging-claim).

The inflammation response and mood balance claims have their own pages too, with the underlying mechanism literature mapped to each: see [The Inflammation Response Claim](/science/claims/inflammation-response) and [The Mood Balance Claim](/science/claims/mood-balance).

## What This Cluster Is Not

This cluster is not an exhaustive citation index for every claim. It is the explanation layer: what each claim means in plain English, what mechanism in the published literature it ties to, and what the limits of the supporting evidence are. The underlying mechanism literature is reasonable for each claim we make, in the published animal and human work at least. We do not claim treatment effects, we do not claim cure, and we do not extrapolate animal findings into human clinical claims. Every claim we make on the label has a published mechanism behind it adn a defensible interpretation under DSHEA.
