# The Same Name on the Calendar

In the mid-1990s, a young Dallas pianist named Marc Toussaint took one of his first gigs at a restaurant Mike McRae ran. "It was an interesting gig," Toussaint said later, "but we became friends."

Twenty years on - April 22, 2014 - McRae and his longtime partner Gabe Nicolella, seventy-plus combined years in the business, opened Table 13, a supper club at Belt Line and Inwood in Addison built like Sinatra-era Las Vegas: steaks for two, stiff drinks. "It's more of an experience, really," McRae said. He called Toussaint. The opening bill ran nine performers deep - Ricki Derek, Rodney Booth, Melani Skybell among the names - and Toussaint's was on it.

By May 2016 he had every Saturday. By 2019, Fridays and Saturdays, 6:30 downbeat, his own band out front. "I never dreamed that all these years later I'd be leading my own band," he said that year.

The music had started in time-outs - his mother spinning Perry Como records while he sat them out - and in four jazz albums bought at a storage-building sale at age ten: Tormé, Adderley, Vaughan, Sinatra. Why those? "Mostly because of their cool jacket photos."

The room changed around him. Charles Bruen joined in 2021 and became owner in May 2025, crediting McRae and Nicolella's mentorship. And on Table 13's 2026 entertainment listings, twelve years after opening night, the same name: Marc Toussaint and Band.
